It’s August 1st – and that means the Women’s Chess Marathon is officially underway!
As part of FIDE’s Year of Social Chess, this month is dedicated to celebrating women and girls in chess – their stories, achievements, and the growing global community working to make chess more welcoming and accessible to all.
Throughout August, we’ll be sharing inspiring events from every continent – from national tournaments to school programs, simultaneous exhibitions, talks, training sessions, and community meetups.
This year, with the support of local organizers and our Commission members, events will be taking place in:
- Americas: Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic
- Africa: South Africa and Zambia
- Asia & Oceania: Nepal and Australia
- Europe: Portugal and Italy
We’re excited to be sharing updates from each of these events throughout the month.
Want to get involved?
You still can – and we’d love to feature your efforts.
Whether you’re a federation, a club, a school, a coach, or simply a passionate individual, here’s how to join:
✅ Organize an activity for women or girls – big or small
✅ Celebrate female role models in your chess community
✅ Share your stories using #WomensChessMarathon and #WomenInChess
✅ Tag @fidewomen on Instagram so we can share your post
✅ Or email our coordinator of this project at anna.kantane@gmail.com to let us know what you’re planning!

We’ll be sharing stories all month long to spotlight the amazing efforts happening worldwide.
Let’s make this a month to remember!
Let’s build a world where no one thinks “chess is not for girls.”
