‘David Smerdon Park’ in Australia!

The FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess is delighted to announce that the local community of Robertson, Australia, has decided to rename Robertson Park in honor of Grandmaster David Smerdon. This rare tribute reflects David’s significant contributions to chess and his dedication to promoting the game.

Didbrook Street Park in Robertson will be renamed to ‘David Smerdon Park’ following a petition recognising the Australian chess Grandmaster’s contributions and connection to the local community.” – has been shared on the local Robertson community website.

Local advocate Mr. Huang, a strong supporter of the renaming petition, expressed that this recognition celebrates David’s deep ties to the Robertson community and serves as an inspiration to local youth, encouraging them to pursue excellence and embrace their potential.

David Smerdon is a very important member of our Commission for years now. During the recent Chess Olympiad in Budapest he held a truly engaging lecture on the gender equity and gap in chess.

David holds a remarkable record of chess achievements as a player and is also a book author. He is only the fourth Australian to earn the Grandmaster title. Formerly the top-ranked chess player in Australia, David remains a formidable force in the game, currently ranked seventh nationally. Since 2004, he has represented Australia at the Chess Olympiad, along with numerous other international competitions.
