As part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Himalayan Chess Academy (HCA) has launched an inspiring empowerment initiative titled “Checkmate Violence: Women’s Empowerment through Chess.” This week, HCA conducted a special workshop at the Shanti Foundation Drop-In Center, an organization dedicated to supporting survivors of trafficking, violence, and high-risk vulnerabilities.

On December 9, seventeen women gathered for a remarkable session that introduced them to chess – not only as a game, but as a pathway toward confidence, agency, and emotional resilience. For all participants, this was their first time experiencing chess, yet the connection to the game was immediate and heartfelt.
Chess as a Safe Space for Agency and Healing
For women who have endured instability, trauma, or life-altering circumstances, regaining a sense of control can be a profound challenge. The workshop highlighted the unique way chess supports this journey:
on the board, every decision belongs to the player. Each move becomes a small act of self-belief.
The session integrated:
- A gentle introduction to chess fundamentals
- Guided exercises on decision-making and emotional regulation
- Open discussions on translating strategic thinking into daily resilience
- Storytelling from Monalisha Khamboo, the first Women’s National Champion of Nepal, who shared her personal journey and the ways chess shaped her own confidence and determination
The room filled with moments of discovery, laughter, reflection, and empowerment. Participants explored how a quiet, strategic game can help rebuild inner strength and foster a renewed sense of capability.

A Transformative Tool Beyond the Board
The workshop reaffirmed something the global chess community continues to witness worldwide:
chess can be a transformative tool for social impact.
Through this initiative, women who had never touched a chessboard before found a space of ownership, calm, and possibility – one move at a time.
HCA observed strong enthusiasm from the participants, many of whom expressed interest in continuing their chess journey. As a result, they are now being integrated into HCA’s Women’s Wednesday chess program, which provides ongoing support, skill-building, and community connection through chess.
A Shared Commitment to Empowerment
The FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess congratulates the Himalayan Chess Academy for this meaningful and compassionate initiative. Their work exemplifies how chess can strengthen women’s voices, provide emotional support, and reinforce a sense of agency – especially for those overcoming adversity.
We extend our appreciation to the Shanti Foundation for opening their doors to this collaboration, and to all the women who participated with courage, openness, and curiosity.
As the global chess community continues to explore ways to contribute to equality, empowerment, and healing, initiatives like “Checkmate Violence” illuminate the profound humanitarian value of our sport.
Special thank you to Monalisha Khamboo, member of our Commission.
