Chess at the Beach – Celebrating International Chess Day 2026
To celebrate International Chess Day 2026, Chess at the Beach brought the game of chess to one of Carinthia’s most beautiful public spaces: Strandbad Klagenfurt on the shores of Lake Wörthersee. The event invited visitors of all ages to discover, learn, and enjoy chess in a relaxed lakeside atmosphere. Throughout the day, the programme combined chess education, recreational play, and friendly competition. Around 100 participants and visitors took part in the various activities, demonstrating that chess can successfully connect generations and create a vibrant community event in an unconventional setting.
Morning – Kids’ Chess Classes
The day began with children’s chess classes, where young participants learned the basic rules, tactical ideas, and strategic principles of the game under the guidance of experienced instructors. The outdoor setting created a relaxed learning environment, allowing children to enjoy chess while spending a summer day at the beach. The sessions were well attended and gave several newcomers their first opportunity to experience organized chess.
Afternoon – Open Chess
In the afternoon, the event opened its chess boards to everyone. Beach visitors, families, recreational players, and experienced club members joined spontaneous games throughout the afternoon. One of the highlights was seeing players of different generations sharing the board – experienced players introducing newcomers to the game while others simply enjoyed friendly matches in the shade overlooking Lake Wörthersee.
The relaxed atmosphere encouraged many passers-by to stop, watch, and even join a game. The unique location inspired creative moments as well, including a memorable chess game played on a stand-up paddleboard in the lake, perfectly reflecting the spirit of “Chess at the Beach.”
Evening – Blitz Tournament
The event concluded with an exciting 20-player blitz tournament, attracting club players and guests from the region. The tournament featured fast-paced games, sporting competition, and many exciting tactical battles. Despite the competitive nature of blitz chess, the atmosphere remained friendly and welcoming and even a brief rain shower could not stop the action. The tournament provided a fitting finale to a day dedicated to celebrating chess in all its forms.

The success of the event provides an excellent foundation for establishing Chess at the Beach as a recurring annual highlight on International Chess Day.
